Heirloom · oral history, by telephone

Their whole life, in their own voice — while you can still ask.

Five patient telephone calls with your parent, kept as a book in their own words and recordings in their own voice.

Before anything else

The interviewer is an artificial intelligence.

Her name is June, and she says so plainly at the start of the first call, and again any time she is asked. That is the part most families want to think about, so here it is first, not buried.

A human interviewer gets tired, forgets, cancels, and would cost a great deal more for the same five conversations. June never does. She has infinite patience for a long story, never interrupts, never checks the clock, and turns up exactly when she says she will. She keeps the name of every cousin and the make of every car your parent mentions, and brings them up weeks later — so each call picks up where the last one stopped, instead of starting over.

And she doesn’t tidy. A ghostwriter would quietly correct your mother’s grammar and smooth her turns of phrase into something more literary. June leaves them exactly as she said them. What comes back is not an improved version of your parent. It’s your parent.

The problem

Every family means to write it down. Almost none do.

You mean to sit them down with a recorder. You mean to ask your dad how he met your mom, about the war, about the house he grew up in. Then a birthday passes, then a year — and one day the stories are gone, and there’s no one left to ask.

Fifty-two weeks in a year. Six of them is all this takes.

How it works

Three steps. Your parent only does one of them.

  1. 1

    Five conversations

At a time you choose, we phone your parent for about 25 minutes. A warm interviewer named June asks about their life — and, the secret, never loses a word of it, carrying every name and story from one week into the next.

  2. 2

    Every word, kept

Each conversation is recorded and written down. Nothing rushed, nothing lost. Your parent controls every topic — anything they’d rather not discuss, they simply leave be, and June moves on.

  3. 3

    A keepsake, for good

Afterward, their stories become a print-ready book in their own words, and the calls themselves in their own voice — a short reel of favourite moments, and every conversation kept whole. Yours to print, share, and read aloud for generations.

What comes back

Her words, kept exactly as she said them.

A book of their life told in their own phrasing — not smoothed into generic prose. If they say “we was,” the book says “we was.” And the recordings: a short one cut from the calls — their actual laugh, their actual way of telling it — and every conversation kept entire behind it.

Chapter Two

Clean as Sunday

We didn’t have two nickels to rub together, but Mama kept us clean as Sunday. She’d have us at the washtub before the sun was properly up, and woe betide the child who turned up to church with a ring round their collar. We was poor, she’d say — but we wasn’t dirty, like that settled the whole matter. And I suppose it did.

Our promises

A keepsake, not a technology stunt.

  1. i.

We will never create a synthetic “clone,” voice double, or avatar of your parent. We preserve their voice — we do not imitate it.

  2. ii.

Your recordings are never sold, shared outside your family, or used to train any AI.

  3. iii.

Your parent controls the map. Any topic, off — any time. Delete anything, ever, and it’s gone.

Questions families ask

The honest answers.

What does my parent have to do?
Answer the phone. That’s the whole job. No apps, no computer, no setup — we handle everything. They just talk.
Isn’t it strange to be interviewed by an AI?
June says plainly what she is at the start of the first call, and again any time she’s asked. Most people stop minding within a minute or two — she’s warm and genuinely curious, and what they remember afterwards is the feeling of being truly listened to.
How do we actually get the book?
As a print-ready PDF, laid out and ready to send to any print shop or photo-book service. Print one copy for every sibling, and another in twenty years if you like. The file is yours to keep — it doesn’t live behind our login, and it doesn’t stop working if we do.
What if the calls stop partway through?
Then we make the keepsake out of the calls that did happen. Even one conversation is a book — a shorter one, in their own words, which was always the point. You get the four files exactly as described, and the fee for the calls that didn’t happen comes back to you. You won’t be asked to explain why.
What if my parent dies before the calls are finished?
Then you don’t have to ask us for anything. We refund the sessions that didn’t happen as soon as we know, and write to tell you it’s done. We finish the keepsake from what was recorded and send it when you’re ready — or if you’d rather we simply send the recordings and stop there, say which. There’s nothing to settle and nobody will chase you.
What about their privacy?
Both you and your parent sign a simple one-page consent. Calls are recorded only to make your keepsakes, stored privately, and deleted whenever you ask. See our promises above.
What if they’re hard of hearing?
June speaks slowly and clearly, repeats and rephrases gladly, and never rushes or talks over a pause. The calls are built for exactly this.
Can they refuse a question?
Always. “Let’s leave that one” is a complete answer, and June moves on warmly, without making it awkward. The stories are theirs to give.
